The price crisis would be finished by 2013
According to the financial journal Estrategia, Jaime Castaneda, general manager of Indura -company now controlled by the American holding Air Products, said that the Chilean salmon industry will recover from the current price crisis very soon.
"The salmon producers think that this low prices period was caused by an oversupply of salmon mainly from Chile, since the companies entered too much smolt at the sea in the past season. However, this trend should be reversed next year, since this huge smolt sowings are not being repeated," Castañeda said.
Besides, according to the general manager of Indura, another important trend in Chile is that the local salmon industry is consolidating, there are progressively fewer and larger players, with the consequent economy-of-scale benefits.
