Taxes for Chilean salmon companies could be doubled
This tax modification looks to raise larger funds and finance more surveillance, monitoring and research for the salmon industry. Besides, the Ministry of Economy considers that the current taxes are too few compared to those paid by the fisheries industry.
The amendment proposal will enter the Congress in the first days of 2012 and expects to collect US$ 1,500 per hectare instead of the US$ 750 currently charged.
According to the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, Empresas AquaChile would have to pay US$ 2.2 million instead of US$ 1.1 million under this new scenario, for example. By this amendment, the Chilean Government expects to increase the taxes collected from the local salmon industry from US$ 10 million to US$ 20 million.
