During the International Seminar "Quality along the value chain in the production of salmonids" organized by Etecma, Mr. Godoy explained that SRS would be responsible for more than 10 percent of all rejections due to quality degradation in the local salmon processing plants. On top of that, there should be added all those effects caused by Kudoa sp., Caligidosis, Diphylobotrium latum, Streptococcosis, Bacterial Kidney Disease, melanosis and atypical Furunculosis, among other parasitic, bacterial, viral and non-infectious causes.

Marcos Godoy explained that from all the skin and muscle injuries caused by SRS, the most impressive are the so called "muscle caverns" which are a consequence of the necrosis caused by the infection of SRS. He added that this disease would be adopting chronic patterns due to the reduced use of antibiotics in the mitigation and control of SRS.

When it comes to melanosis, he emphasized that this problem is not always caused by misapplication of vaccines, revealing that Microsporidium sp. and those damages generated by predators and fractures of bones are also responsible.

Finally, the expert stressed that the local salmon industry needs to understand and minimize the impact of these conditions, calling them to critically evaluate each one of these factors involved.

The seminar was held in Puerto Varas on August 21st and 22nd and it was divided into two sessions: "Improving quality in smolt production" and "Quality in meat production". Key speakers of this seminar were: Ulf Erikson (Sintef), Asli Magnus, Morten Siverstsvik, Jelena Wærsted Kolarevic and Harald Takle (Nofima), Vicente Castro (AVS Chile), Óscar Garay (Salmon Magallanes), Álvaro Rodas (DQS), Marcos Godoy and Rudy Suárez (Etecma).
