Shellfish industry takes advantage of new air route
Around 50,000 langoustines, from waters next to Lochinver are flown from Inverness to Spain, via London Gatwick, within hours, the newspaper Aberdeen Press and Journal reported. The trial service began in August, bringing a much-needed sigh of relief to the industry that had been struggling for almost 12 months to meet the speedy transit needs of its live cargo. The Highland fisheries industry have struggled to export its product, often having to drive hundreds of miles to Aberdeen or Edinburgh with their goods.But when Flybe introduced its new Embarer 195 jet aircraft at the beginning of the 2008 summer season, the industry was once again able to fly its fresh products abroad, ensuring maximum freshness and revenue, the newspaper wrote.
