Scots salmon target China and the US
According to Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO), the industry is hoping that it will be able to build further on the strong trade relations developed in markets such as China and US in recent years.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to raise awareness in both the US and Asian markets, building on the strong trade relationships that have been developed over many years. What we are moving towards now, however, is a much more targeted, strategic export focus. The US is definitely going to grow, as are China and Hong Kong,” Landsburgh says.
Since 2012, the SSPO, along with Seafood Scotland and Scottish Development International (SDI), has been part of a successful awareness raising programme to help promote the provenance and quality of Scottish salmon in new and emerging Asian markets, matched with funding from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).
“The programme essentially enables industry representatives to host and attend international events to promote Scottish salmon and to meet key buyers and suppliers...and there are high hopes that another collaboration contract will be agreed upon next year to run for a further three years,” Landsburgh adds.
