SAMS and Aquapharm sign marine products agreement
SAMS will provide Aquapharm with privileged access to the vast array of marine samples that it has collected from diverse marine habitats around the globe. Aquapharm will then apply its extensive culturing and marine fermentation know-how to these samples to capture and harness the full microbial biodiversity that they contain, further expanding the scope of its collection of marine micro-organisms.
On signing the agreement, Aquapharm CEO Simon Best said: “Broad access to new sources of biodiversity is a key feature of Aquapharm’s business and this alliance with SAMS not only cements the bonds between two of the UK’s premier marine-focused organisations; it also ensures that Aquapharm remains one of the leaders in the commercialisation of marine science.” Prof. Laurence Mee, SAMS Director added: "Working with Aquapharm enables SAMS to capitalise on its fundamental marine science platform and turn basic research into successful commercial products with wide market appeal. What’s more, the development of marine microbe derived products can be achieved with minimal environmental impact and is a critical step in our mission to understand how to sustainably utilise the enormous potential of the world’s oceans."
