
Salmon regions avoid rise in unemployment
Christian Pérez 15,670 new jobs were created in the past three months in the Region of Los Lagos compared to the same period of the previous year, representing a 3.6% unemployment rate in the period. Los Lagos is the second region with the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
Moreover, Puerto Montt is one of the Chilean cities with the lowest unemployment rate in the period with 2.9%. By contrast, in the trimester January-March 2010 and after the sanitary crisis triggered by the ISA virus, Puerto Montt registered an unemployment rate of 9.9%. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Aysén was the third region with the lowest unemployment rate in the country with 3.4%. Finally, Magallanes –where the industry is rapidly establishing more salmon farming sites, was the region with the lowest unemployment rate in the period with 3.3%.
