Salmon market down 6 percent in 2009
Cermaq CFO, Steven Rafferty said on the North Atlantic Seafood Conference yesterday that the annual growth in the salmon market since 1994 has been between 2 - 22 percent. Since 1994 it has not been a single year with decrease in salmon supply, world wide. Not until 2009.
- In Chile the harvesting volume will go down from 394 000 tons in 2008 to estimated 196 000 tons in 2009. In Norway we expect an increase in harvesting volume of 12 percent, or 80 000 tons. Even if we add increased volumes from UK, Canada and the Faroe Islands, we are far from supplying the demand, says Steven Rafferty. He believs that the shortage in the salmon markets will affect the prices.
- Yes, I think the prices will go up, but I hope we dont see 30 NOK per kilo, he says. ,
