Salmon is the choice of health conscious UK consumers
Salmon is one of the winners in UK supermarket shelves, according to market analyst AC Neilsen. The analysts said that the fish had experienced a remarkable sales growth in the last two years, as consumers appear to increasingly shop for healthy options.
The biggest growing superfood is the blueberry, which sales have more than doubled (+132%) in the last two years .
Salmon is another big grower – sales have increased 31% in the past 2 years to around £450 million per year, an increase of £105 million versus 2005.
“This growth rate does not surprise me. Salmon is a rich natural source of Omega 3 which helps heart health and joints – it is also believed that Omega 3 can increase brain development in children,” said Jonathan Banks, business insight director at market analyst AC Neilsen.
