Salmon is still one of the main local exports
A report submitted by the Chilean General Directorate of International Economic Relations (Direcon) detailed that salmon was the non-traditional product most exported to USA in 2009 with USD 893 million and representing a 5.6% of the total exports to that market. Likewise, it has the top position in Asia with USD 968 million and representing 4.3% of the total exports to that region.
Meanwhile, with USD 220 million and 2.2% of the total exports to Europe, salmonids were ranked 2nd among the non-traditional products shipped to the Old World just after the wine exports.
According to Direcon, the non-traditional products are everyone but copper, fish meal, cellulose, iron, saltpeter, metallic plate, oxide and ferromolybdenum, gold minerals, some wood products and methyl alcohol.
