This economic activity generated more than 30,000 direct jobs in its best moment, the year 2006. However, at the beginning of this year this industry experienced its worst time ever, in which it employed no more than 15,000 direct workers.

According to the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, today the industry has shown improvements in all its production indexes and currently there are between 18,000 and 19,000 direct employees working in this industry, mainly in the 10th and 11th Regions.

This better production scenario has also impacted indirect employment, mainly in suppliers of salmon producing companies. Despite these promising expectations, some industry executives believe that resuming the employment levels that this industry had four years ago will be very hard.
