Salmon escaped from Marine Harvest

It was seven 1 kg sized salmon that escaped on the 12 of October this year from Marine Harvest’s Ardnish site in the Highlands. The cause of the escape was human error, according to statistics from the Scottish Government. 

The Government statistics currently show escapes up to 12 October 2009.

Further escape incidents will only be added to this table after final numbers have been confirmed
An operator will submit final confirmation of the number of escaped fish within 28 days of submitting their initial notification to Scottish Ministers

So far, 131,971 salmon have escaped from Scottish salmon farms in nine incidents. The reasons for the escapes included holes in the nets, equipment failure and human errors.

Up to 12 October, there were also five breaches of containments at trout farms in Scotland. The total number of trout that had escaped was 8591.
