“We are going through a very difficult time,” is the current answer when asking any salmon company owner, board member, general manager, or PR manager how they are faring. A marked increase in production costs such as fuel and fish feed, a more marked increase in fish health problems such as sea lice, SRS and ISA, social-economic problems with industry labour unions, plus the dropping value of the dollar sums up the short-term panorama for Chile’s salmon industry. Carlos Vial, ex-president of SalmonChile and vicepresident of Salmones Friosur puts it quite frankly, “This year is a disaster and it will continue like this until 2010,” in an interview with the Diario Financiero.
