Regulation enacted
Fontaine remarked the importance of this promulgation commenting that “this is good news because it goes in the path of the recovery of a sector extremely relevant and also depressed, aiming to the birth of a new salmon industry healthier and more vigorous than its predecessor” adding that “as the Government, we are aware that this is a step forward but we are also conscious that there is a lot to improve until we reach the standards that we want for this industry”.
According to the Chilean Salmon Association (SalmonChile), its chairman César Barros said regarding this enactment that “we are pleased. This is an important landmark; however it is just the first step to build a new salmon industry”.
Among other aspects, this new regulation put in place a new productive model based on groups of concessions coordinated from the Under-secretary of Fisheries (Subpesca) establishing stricter sanitary measures, such as: fallow and sowing periods within operations. Besides, it strengthens the prevention and overseeing roles of the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca).
