Rainbow trout is the main aquaculture export product
Rainbow trout exports totalized USD 256.8 million in the first four months of 2010 while Atlantic salmon exports reported sales for USD 218.5 million. Meanwhile, Coho salmon exports experienced a 3.8% decrease, from USD 211.6 million down to USD 206.3 million.
The fourth place among the largest aquaculture export products was for mussels, which showed a 26.4% increase from USD 32.5 million up to USD 41.1 million. According to the Chilean Under-Secretary of Fisheries (Subpesca) this is a consequence of economic recovery in the European (especially Spain and Italy) and USA markets.
Regarding the main kinds of processing lines, there have not been major variations with significant deficits in each one of them just attenuated by positive results in salted products from Coho salmon and Rainbow trout, both mainly produced for the Japanese market.
