Good news for the commercial side salmon industry, but perhaps horrible news for those who have farming concessions close to the planned port area or who have built their homes to overlook the beautiful ocean view. Empormontt, the port company of Puerto Montt announced today its grandiose plans to improve its port infrastructure as well as its port and shipping services. Although no specific time frame was mentioned, Empormontt’s most important plan is to build a shipping dock exclusively for cargo vessels approximately 20 Km south of the city. Pto. Montt has never been considered a true port city since it can only receive one large vessel at a time through its relatively narrow port passage, and today’s extra large vessels simply do not fit. Empormontt has determined that the area between Panitao and Bahia Ilque is the most feasible for the construction of a shipping dock, along with eight hectares of land between the dock and the highway, which will be converted into a port service zone.
