Plan implemented to avoid stealing of salmon
Last September, the local police arrested 11 people accused of stealing salmon from a farming site pertaining to Mainstream Chile and located in the 10th Region. This successful achievement was the result of a continuous vigilance in the area. As a consequence, the Chilean authorities expect to focus their vigilance over other farming sites being harvested.
According to the local newspaper El Llanquihue, although this is a complex task, the guarded area has been progressively reduced depending on the location and frequency of these thefts. In fact, after 50 confiscated tonnes and 50 arrested people this year, a major part of this stealing phenomenon has moved south to the area of Melinka, due to its isolation and lack of vigilance.
Besides, in order to reduce these losses –calculated in close to USD 50 million per year- the general manager of the Chilean Association of the Salmon Industry, Carlos Odebret, suggested stricter inspections in highways and sale spots.
