One fourth of all workers will be fired
The Chilean Salmon Industry Association (SalmonChile) forecasts that dismissals will start in March 2010 totalizing 5,000 jobs lost as of June this year. “A very hard period is coming” recognizes Carlos Odebret, SalmonChile’s general manager, adding that this situation might also affect indirect jobs.
According to El Mercurio, this new dismissals will be caused by lower raw material to process in the coming months due to a halt in the Coho salmon harvests. However, some recovery in the second semester is expected.
“We hope to take up again activity in October with a new Coho salmon harvest season and the firsts Atlantic salmon harvests under the new productive model” Odebret concluded.
