Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions visits Chile
The L.O., the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions, followed through with their commitment of meeting with workers’ federation leaders in the salmon industry, especially those associated with the Cermaq affiliate Mainstream. Earlier this year one of Chile’s most prominent worker federation leaders (Ricardo Casas of Fetrainpes) made the trip to Oslo, through the financial help of the Pure Salmon Campaign, to personally communicate his federation’s petition for stricter enforcement of CERMAQ’s policies regarding workers’ benefits in Chile. On that trip he also met with the L.O. to learn about workers’ issues in Norway, where they agreed to meet again later this year in Chile. Last week in a meeting with Karlson and three of Chile’s largest workers’ federations, Senator Camilo Escalona took the stage as guest speaker to present his royalty proposal that is directed at the salmon producers in Chile. Escalona took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of the royalty idea, in order to help the salmon farming regions improve infrastructural and environmental issues that are in deterioration due to the salmon farming activity.
