New escape incidents
According to the Scottish Government’s statistics on breaches of containment on fish farms in Scotland for 2013, four escape incidents took place this late spring and summer up until 15 July.
One escape occurred 3 June at the trout farm Kames Fish Farming in Pertshire, owned by Loch Tay Ltd. A hole in the net due to a predator caused 200 fish of 199g size to escape.
There have also been three breaches of containment on salmon farms in the last few months.
On 28 May, one 4kg salmon escaped from Scottish Sea Farms Dunstaffnage site in Strathclyde. The cause of the incident was human error.
Then 6 June, an unconfirmed number of salmon is listed as having escaped from Scottish Sea Farms’ Bight of Bellister site in Shetland.
On 15 July, 200 10.79g salmon juveniles escaped from Marine Harvest Scotland’s Laddie Wood site in Loch Garry, Inverness-shire.
