Siri Elise Dybdal
25,259 salmon (5.77kg) escaped on the 11 February from the North Voe Whalsay site in Shetland owned by Hjaltland Sea Farms. The cause of the escape was reported to be a hole in the net caused by a predator, according to Scottish Government records.
The incident is the fifth escape from Scottish salmon farms this year. So far this year a total of 182,479 salmon have escaped. The vast majority of the fish escaped in the incident at the Meridian Salmon site in Shetland in January, when sever weather led to mooring failure and the escape of 154,569 salmon.
