Integrity 'from barge to bite': BioMar unveils pellets for waterborne feeding

BioMar today launched POWER H2O, a new feed solution tailored for waterborne feeding systems.

The aquafeed producer said the product introduces a specific formulation and enhanced physical qualities tailored for underwater pellet delivery. It addresses the unique demands of waterborne feeding systems, including extended time in water, higher water pressure, and different environmental conditions at depth.

“The use of waterborne feeding systems introduces a new set of challenges, and it requires a feed built for this farming reality,” Ewan Cameron, product manager for salmon grower feeds at BioMar, said in a press release. “POWER H2O combines robust pellet durability with excellent digestibility and minimal nutrient loss, making it the ideal feed for salmon farmers adopting these systems.”

From barge to bite

Salmon farmers are increasingly using waterborne feeding systems, which reduce noice, microplastics, and energy use. Feeding fish at depth instead of on the surface also reduces sea lice exposure. However, waterborne feeding may increase the risk of pellet damage and nutrient loss before consumption. POWER H2O is designed to maintain pellet integrity better from barge to bite.

“Initial testing has shown that conventional feeds can lose essential nutrients quickly when delivered via waterborne systems,” said Paddy Campbell, vice president salmon at BioMar Group. “With POWER H2O, we’ve focused on safeguarding feed pellet quality throughout the feeding delivery process. It represents a change that can have a big impact.”

POWER H2O, which was launched at Aqua Nor in Trondheim, is now available in Norway and the initiative will soon be expanded across other regions and product ranges.
