Shetland escape reported
Balta Island Seafare, one of Scotland’s last independent salmon producers, which operates from the island of Unst, has reported an escape incident.
The producer has alerted the authorities to the incident, which occurred between the 1st and 9th of January and was caused by snagging or chafing of a net round a pen containing fish averaging 900g. However, the full extent of the escape has not yet been quantified.
The company, which is also the most northerly salmon producer in the UK, has yet to comment on the event.
Despite this winter’s regular violent storms, it is the first escape incident reported since human error accounted for the loss of one 3kg fish from The Scottish Salmon Company’s Geasgill site, on Mull, on October 14th.
