The era of four figure fish
The price for larger sizes of Norwegian salmon is continuing its push towards NOK 100 per kilo, raising the prospect of the largest fish fetching over NOK 1000 apiece, despite the price of smaller fish experiencing a drop during week 28.
The latest figures from Akvafakta show that salmon in every size class up to 5kg have experienced a drop in prices, causing the overall average to fall to NOK 75.13/kg – a dip of NOK 0.6/kg or 0.79%.
However, salmon in every category from 5-6 kilos upwards have experienced a continued upturn, with fish in the 9kg+ bracket averaging a suitably whopping NOK 95.15/kg – in other words the biggest fish are bringing in at least NOK 850 each, making it likely that some individuals are already fetching four figures.
Such prices are no doubt a reflection of the comparative scarcity of salmon – Norwegian exports in both week 26 and week 27 were 20% lower than in the same weeks of 2015, while the total exports up to the end of week 27 was 554,951 tonnes, down from 600,214 in the same period last year.
