Whale-free feed declaration
Bakkafrost has decided to issue a statement distancing itself from the Faroe Islands’ whaling industry.
The statement, from CEO Regin Jacobsen, follows considerable criticism by the press and environmental NGOs of the archipelago’s traditional hunting practices, which account for the harvest of around 800 pilot whales a year.
The statement reads: “Bakkafrost hereby declares that none our fish farming activities are associated with whaling. No boats or other assets owned by Bakkafrost are utilized in whaling activities, and our employees are not allowed to participate in whaling activities during their work hours.”
He goes on to say that whale products are not used in the company’s fed production division, Havsbrún, either – pointing to the division’s Global GAP and ISO 9001:2008 certification.
“Bakkafrost hereby declares that no whale meat is used in our feed,” he asserts.
