Working for a better mussel industry
The executive secretary of the Chilean Aquaculture Cluster, Felipe Sandoval, said that "the idea is to anticipate the future. We don't want to live the same experience of the salmon industry. We must learn from it. This is an industry that grows, but when it grows to much can have problems and it is necessary to anticipate before that happen".
The manager of the PTI Mitílidos, Jorge Muñoz, said that the mussel industry in Chile is a natural patrimony that generates employment, richness and economic and social stability. "Although, to achieve all these, we have to work in a coordinated way", he said.
The Chilean mussel industry is facing a challenge moment with a lower demand in important markets such as Spain, France and Italy. The mussel farmers expect a 40% drop in production for this year.
