According to the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, this step could mean that the days of the salmon ‘economical reign' could be numbered, since this achievement allow them to start a large-scale production of one of the oldest living things on earth, that has so far existed for more than 40 million years.

The researcher of the University of Los Lagos, Juan Carlos Uribe, said that "this project is of interest to Chile due to the sturgeon meat and caviar market prices, but also because this specie is on the edge of extinction".

With an initial investment of USD 780,000 for three years, this project began in 1986 aimed to develop the required technology to reach industrial production levels of sturgeon meat and caviar.
