Last week the Confederation of salmon industry workers (Conatrasal) led a demonstration to promote community awareness regarding the seriousness of the level of unemployment spurred since the advent of the salmon industry’s ISA crisis. Conatrasal claimed that the number of persons left without work in the salmon industry has reached 4,000. The campaign was successful enough to gain a response from the Regional Governor Sergio Galilea, who recently declared the Lakes Region as an “urgent labor crisis zone”. Galilea proposed to create a local salmon round table to initiate pool together as many social and private services available to establish measures to help reduce the negative social impacts resulting from the labor crisis (displaced worker training, micro-business incentives, basic social services, etc). The governor also intends to incorporate the president of Conatrasal, Javier Ugarte, as a permanent member of the Economic Ministry’s round table regarding the nations salmon industry crisis.
