Tight supply of salmon roe in Chile
The general manager of the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry (SalmonChile), Carlos Odebret, recognized this situation which specially affects Atlantic salmon, while he commented that these are the kind of expected results after the implementation of measures aimed to protect the sanitary patrimony.
Regarding the causes of this short supply, Odebret explained that a major part of the Atlantic salmon broodstock was affected by ISA virus during the crisis and thus their participation in spawning was reduced while the new sanitary regulation restricts even more the roe imports, especially for Atlantic salmon.
According to Diario Financiero, the general manager of SalmonChile said that several companies are building inland ponds oriented to transfer their broodstock into freshwater and fully closed cycles.
