Is it sensational pessimism or the actual truth? Four thousand jobs does sound preposterous, however a look back at the headlines throughout most of year do indicate four processing plant closures, numerous farm site closures, feed plant closures, and the domino effect extending to all of the service providers dependent on the salmon industry: feed suppliers; farm site maintenance providers; transport services such as for personnel, feed and supplies, live fish, harvested fish, fish mortality; labour subcontractors for farms and processing plants; suppliers and service providers for processing plants; and the list goes on. According to the Diario Financiero, the economic analyst and specialist of the salmon sector of Inversiones LarrainVial, Patricia Pellegrini states, “The local salmon industry is passing through one of its most difficult moments. The sanitary and economic situation could arise to the closure of some companies dependent on bank financing, which in turn will provide opportunity for those companies with more stable sources of working capital.”
