
The US still the largest market for Chilean salmon
Christian Pérez According to the most recently published monthly report of foreign trade prepared by the National Customs Service, the US was the largest market for Chilean salmon (Atlantic and Coho) up to September this year (39%), followed by Brazil (17%), Japan (14%) and Russia (6%). Likewise, Japan was the largest market for Chilean Rainbow trout in the period, concentrating 56 percent of those exports, followed by Russia (15%), the US (11%) and China with 4 percent. The Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalized US$ 2,499 million in the first nine months of this year, representing a 16.3 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year, when the industry had returns of US$ 2,149.1 million. While the returns from salmon exports have seen a 34 percent increase in the first nine months of this year (US$ 1,941.3 million) compared to the same period of 2012 (US$ 1,452.8 million), the sales of Rainbow trout have experienced a 20 percent decrease from US$ 696.3 million to US$ 557.7 million.
