The US still the largest market for Chilean salmon in January
Christian Pérez According to the most recently published annual report of foreign trade prepared by the National Customs Service, the US was the largest market for Chilean salmon (Atlantic and Coho) in 2013 (30%), followed by Japan (28%), Brazil (14%) and Russia (6%). Likewise, Japan was the largest market for Chilean Rainbow trout in the period, concentrating 59 percent of those exports, followed by the US (20%) and Russia (10%). The Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalized US$ 417.7 million in January this year, representing a 35.8 percent increase compared to January 2013, when the industry had returns of US$ 307.5 million. While the returns from salmon exports experienced a 61 percent increase in 2013 (US$ 367.7 million) compared to the previous year (US$ 228.9 million), the sales of Rainbow trout recorded a 36 percent decrease from US$ 78.6 million to US$ 50 million.
