They responded to the consensus proposal submitted last week in a meeting organized by the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, which gathered more than one hundred representatives of the local salmon industry to discuss the sector production model. Minister Longueira explained that the proposal of the salmon industry recommends incorporating a complementary measure to the Sanitary Regulation (RESA), related to fish mortality indicators in fish farms.

This means including an amendment to the Sanitary Regulations in order to reduce the number of fish stocked in a farm if a determined facility has recorded an increased mortality rate in the previous farming season.

However, this measure is focused on individual farms and does not prevent those sanitary problems caused by grouping (neighborhoods) according to the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca). Besides, Subpesca still needs the industry response about the stocking densities regulation proposed last August by the Mr Galilea.

On that occasion, it was agreed to make a joint effort between the government and the salmon producers to arrange a regulation proposal for stocking densities to be discussed on December the 1st, 2012. Meanwhile, the undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Pablo Galilea, appreciated the agreement reached by the different guilds of salmon producers and non-affiliated companies, which reveals a desire for dialogue, essential for the future of this industry.
