Stronger institutionality to be enacted
These modifications imply reorganization and modernization of the fisheries and aquaculture institutionality. Among others, after approval of this project, Subpesca will become the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Likewise, Sernapesca will become the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service. To date, these institutions do not include the concept "aquaculture" in their names.
However, this is not just a change of names. This project also establishes the creation of the National Aquaculture Commission: specialized institution in charge of analyze and reach verdicts regarding regulatory issues which certainly constitutes one of the main concerns among fish farmers.
Besides, these modifications include creation of an Aquaculture Division and a Department of Artisanal Fisheries in Subpesca and 3 new Fisheries Zonal Councils, located in the cities of Constitución, Valdivia and Puerto Aysén.
This project was approved with 94 votes in favour, 1 against and 6 abstentions.
