Strong decrease in fishmeal and fish oil productions
According to the Industrial Fishing Association of the Bío Bío Region (Asipes) the fishmeal production fell from 69,477 tonnes down to 35,421 tonnes. In turn, the fish oil production decreased from 266,905 tonnes obtained in the first six months of 2009 to 145,707 tonnes this year
The general manager of Asipes, Luis Felipe Moncada, explained that as they warned in last March, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami had huge consequences over the fishing industry of the central/southern region of Chile. “Five months after that, the industry still feels the effects of the damage on 10 of the 14 fishmeal processing plants and in 12 of the 17 unloading facilities,” he said.
