Storm tears nets in Western Norway

A storm along the western coast of Norway on Sunday caused major problems for salmon farmers outside Snilstveitøy, at Rosendal in Hardanger. Sjøtroll and Eide Sjøbruk are among the salmon farmers affected.

Sjøtroll observed a tear of between 3-4 metres in one cage when the storm had subsided. Eide Sjøbruk experienced only two minor incidents, with holes 20x30 centimetres and 10x20 centimetres.

"We do not exclude that there is a significant escape. There is recapturing going on now," says Geir Martin Kvamme from the Directorate of Fisheries Region West.

The escaped salmon has an average weight of 800 grams. The incident is not recognized as a major problem for wild salmon.
