Skretting involved in a restock program
According to the fish feed producer company, those fish were hatched and raised at a small hatchery exclusively dedicated to wild fish restocks. “The municipalities of Panguipulli and Villarrica contributed with part of the financing needed; while Skretting and the diagnostic laboratory Biovac, together with the Veterinarian Francisco Estay provided their products and services” detailed Alejandro Koffmann, chairman of the Fishing and Hunting Club of Lican-Ray.
These fish were released in the Huitag wetland, location that counts with a “natural protected area” character and it is also part of the same basin of origin than the released fish’s progenitors.
The main purpose of this project aims to decrease the damage that the shoals of salmonids suffer in the Calafquén basin due to contamination and predation of breeders during the spawning season, because “the consequent decline in recreational fishing impacts the touristic attraction of the zone and hence its economy” concluded Koffmann.
