Shake-up in salmon market ranking

According to a study submitted by the Chilean General Directorate of International Economic Relations (DIRECON) exports to Japan grew 15% between 2008 and 2009 separated in a 6.5% decrease in volume and a 23% increase in the unitary value. Meanwhile, exports to USA decreased by 32% in the same period, divided in a 38% decrease in volume and a 9.5% increase in the unitary value.

Latin America was the third largest market, where MERCOSUR (a customs union between South American countries) represented 10% of the Chilean salmon exports, representing a 21% interannual growth in exported value. Brazil and Argentina concentrated 99% of the shipments to MERCOSUR.
