Yesterday the confederation leaders of Conatrasal explained their situation to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission of the Chamber of Congress, following last week’s push to speak with the Minister of Economics Hugo Lavados. The intention of the meeting with the Economic Minister was to gain an invitation for Javier Ugarte, president of Conatrasal, to participate in the Ministry’s round table involving the salmon industry crisis, yet no confirmation of the invitation has been released. Yesterday’s meeting with the Congress Commission was to gain further support in the mitigation of the social impacts resulting from the loss of jobs in the salmon industry. In Aqua.cl Ugarte states, “We need to be heard, because the workers and their families cannot live in this uncertainty of whether they will lose their job or not. We are determined to find concrete solutions to help those 4,000 persons who have already been cut off from the industry, and for those who will receive the job cuts to come in 2009.”
