The governor Kusanovic believes that within its first year of operations the salmon producing companies can produce 30,000 tonnes of salmonids in the 12th Region, considering the approval of 600 concessions. Currently, there are 1,200 applications for aquaculture concessions in that region.

According to the financial journal Estrategia, the 12th Region has a workforce of about 70,000 people of whom almost 6% were unemployed between March and May this year. If her production expectations are reached, Kusanovic believes that salmon producing companies will hire about 3,000 people and, hence, unemployment will be decreased by half.

She also commented that environmental protection has to be a keystone in each aquaculture project because “this is too important for the success of this great undertaking, especially on the issue about the distance between the neighborhoods," she said.
