Salmon exports increase
So far this year salmon exports have reached NOK 31.9 billion, an increase of 17 per cent compared with the same period last year.
“Despite the fact that Norwegian salmon has been banned from the Russian market in the past two months, we see an overall increase in export value. Demand continues to increase and we see an increase in both export volumes and higher salmon prices,” says Paul T Aandahl, branch manager for salmon and trout in Norwegian Seafood Council.
In terms of product weight, Norway exported 91,000 tonnes of salmon in September. It's about the same volume as the month of September last year. This year, Norway has exported a total of 725,000 tonnes of salmon, which is an increase of 9 per cent compared with the same period last year.
The average price of fresh whole salmon rose by 4 per cent in September omapared to the same month in 2013, to reach NOK 34.85 per kilo. Overall this year, the average price for fresh whole salmon is NOK 42.15 per kilo.
Norwegian exports of salmon to the EU totalled NOK 2.5 billion in September, which is an increase of 15 percent compared to last September. So far this year Norway exported salmon to the EU for NOK 21.7 billion, which is an increase of 19 per cent compared with the same period last year.
In terms of product weight 511,000 tonnes of salmon were exported to the EU this year, which is an increase of 12 per cent compared with the same period last year. The volume of exports to the EU amounted to just over 70 per cent of the total salmon exports from Norway this year and the largest markets were Poland and France.
Exports to eastern Europe were only NOK 177 million in September, which is a decline of 56 per cent compared to last September. This is mainly related to the Russian import ban and a reduced demand in the Ukraine.
Exports to Asia reached NOK 581 million in September, which is an increase of 10 per cent compared to last September. So far this year exports to Asia have totalled NOK 4.7 billion – up 22 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Exports to the US rose by 19 per cent to reach NOK 148 million in September. So far this year salmon exports to the US have totalled NOK 1.35 billion, up by 98 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Trout exports rose by 4 per cent to reach NOK 207 million September. So far this year, trout exports have risen by 8 per cent to total NOK 1.8 billion.
