Recovery in the Chilean salmon industry
Among other improvements, Pablo Galilea commented that the farming density was 31 Kg/m3 in the past, while today it is 13 Kg/m3. Meanwhile, mortality monthly rates have decreased from 4.15% to 0.81% and average harvest weights of Atlantic salmon have increased from 3.5 Kg to 5.1 Kg, he said.
According to the local newspaper El Diario de Aysén, The Undersecretary of Fisheries also highlighted that roe imports have been reduced to very low levels while replaced with local production; and unlike the past, farming sites have to mandatorily accomplish sanitary fallows.
Besides, Pablo Galilea stated that this recovery process has to be guided with caution by the salmon producing companies, beyond the natural enthusiasm caused by this positive production indexes.
