Record vaccine sales

Published Modified

This is mainly due to a very early start of S0 vaccination this year. When summing up the vaccination of the S1 2014 generation, total vaccine sales in the period September 2013 through May 2014 ended at 181 million doses compared to 172.5 million doses for the S1 2013. This is an increase of nearly 5%, but part of vaccine sales in late May must be considered for vaccination of the S0's.

The S1/S0 split in vaccine sales must be further evaluated. However, based on previous years' experience and the actual S1-vaccine sales, it is not unlikely that we will see a slight increase in the S1-2014 generation compared to S1-2013. In 2013 the actual S1- release was 157.5 million (source: Kontali analyse).Total sales of vaccines will never give an exact picture of the actual number of smolts released, but it is a strong indicator.

There is always some uncertainty related to the split in vaccination of S0s compared to S1s in September, and if any vaccine ordered in May, is intended for S0 vaccination starting in June. Additional factors are the possibility of un-used vaccine and the variation in loss rate between generations in the period from vaccination to sea entry.
