When asked about the possibility of creating an Undersecretary of Aquaculture, current Undersecretary of Fisheries Jorge Chocair said, “If you ask what I really think is needed in terms of an institution I would say a Ministry of Fisheries, under which exists the Undersecretaries [Fisheries and Aquaculture]. But at the present time the conditions are not given for this. The present structure of the Undersecretary of Fisheries lacks maturation before effectively building one for aquaculture. But if it weren’t for this, today we must tackle the institutional pitfalls and give importance to the [aquaculture] sector.” In his interview with Aqua.cl he was also asked about the regulative inefficiencies regarding the National Fisheries Service, the undersecretary branch that oversees fish harvests sanitation regulations for fisheries exports. Chocair responded that he has hired people who are working exclusively on that problem, which is one of the most urgent issues affecting aquaculture sector.
