Pancreas Disease poses concern for salmon industry
"We ask that the government react quickly, and that we have a screening and selection process for all egg imports. Furthermore, we ask that all eggs that pass the first test, be inspected again during the alevin stage," states Victor Hugo Puchi in the Diario Financiero regarding his apprehension with eggs imported from other countries. He believes that ISA arose from imported eggs, claiming, "[PD] is an apprehension because just as ISA arrived through imported eggs, we are concerned that no more new diseases enter Chile, among these PD, which is in Norway and many eggs are imported from there." Empresas AquaChile has good reason for concern. Although not hit nearly as bad as Marine Harvest or Mainstream, ISA has claimed eleven of AquaChile's farms to date. Puchi's most wise comment in closing, "We must accept more strict and more expensive norms that will most likely result in reductions in production or important economic costs in the short term, but what we are doing is buying the future now."
