Norway defeated Chile in USA

The Chilean salmon producers sent 1,987 tonnes of fresh farmed salmon fillets to the USA in January representing a 68.94% decrease compared with the 6,399 tonnes exported in the first month of 2009.

In terms of value, the American imports of fresh farmed salmon fillets from Chile decreased by 60.59% from USD 47.9 million to USD 18.9 million according to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service.

Meanwhile, Norway surpassed Chile as the main supplier of fresh farmed salmon fillets in that market. In January 2010 USA imported 2,217 tonnes of this product from Norway representing a 679.47% increase compared with the 284 tonnes sent in January 2009. The value of the Norwegian exports of fresh farmed salmon fillets to the USA increased an impressive 822.71% from USD 2.2 million to USD 20.6 million.

In total, USA imported 5,472 tonnes of fresh farmed salmon fillets in January 2010 worth USD 52.6 million.
