The seminar “Water Quality for Sustainability” organized by Global Environmental Quality (GEQ) S.A. and NIVA Chile brought together various interested users of Chile’s southern lake resources (salmon companies, tourism companies, public officials) to introduce their proposal to develop an integrated management plan starting with the nation’s largest and most well known lake, Lake Llanquihue, which has been the mainstay for the fresh water stage of salmon production throughout the salmon industry’s early years. Dr. Aase Aatland, Director of NIVA Chile stated in regard to the current environmental condition of the Lake Llanquihue, Chile has the opportunity learn greatly from the mistakes of other countries, and NIVA is able to provide the information tools necessary to adopt the best management practices adequate to Chile’s local conditions.
