New eco-standard for salmon
Donegal-based seafood company, Marine Harvest has become the first company in the world to qualify for Bord Iascaigh Mhara’s (BIM) Irish Quality Eco-Salmon Standard, which is only awarded to salmon growers and processors who adhere to stringent environmental management practices in all aspects of their business.
The standard guarantees assurance that the salmon has been produced with due care for the environment, above and beyond all existing requirements and is accredited to EN45011, the Gold Standard for product certification.
“While eco-standards exist internationally the launch of this accreditation scheme is a world first for farmed salmon. Seafood products accredited under this scheme will be of unrivalled quality. Critically, they come from a highly sustainable source and are produced with minimal environmental impact.”
Jan Feenstra, Managing Director, Marine Harvest said: “The Eco Salmon Accreditation Scheme is a major achievement for our company, for retailers and consumers and for the reputation of sustainably-produced Irish seafood.”
Salmon is the second product accredited under BIM’s Eco Quality Scheme. Irish mussels were launched under the Scheme in late 2007.
