The reason for this, he said, is that the Chilean authorities were unable to manage the deadline of the 1. of May. Inspectors from Russia have already been to Chile to investigate the seafood industry. The reason for the investigation is to find out if the industry fullfill the Russian standards for seafood production.

Igor Chernyshenko told FishfarmingXpert that the Russian will use the experience from the investigation against Norway (2005-2007), and establish this as a model for further investigations. Norwegian farmed salmon was banned for several months while the Russians claimed to have found cadmium and led in the fish. Later a few processing plants were allowed to export salmon to Russia. It is expected that the same will hapened to the Chilean salmon industry.
