Multiexport work barges up for design award
The World Architecture Festival of Barcelona will be held next month and Chilean architect Juan Sabbagh is an award nominee for his work developed for the salmon company Multiexport Foods. Sabbagh developed a series of floating home / feed barge structures for 12 of Multiexport’s farms throughout Region of Aysén. His floating home design will be competing with 722 other architects from 63 countries for the world’s best design in the Home, Housing category. Multiexport’s “homes” are pontoon barges with two to three floors, with the main floor as the administrative or production area and the upper floors as living quarters. They come equipped with a TV and game room, exercise room, and wi-fi room (cyber-cafés as they’re called in Chile) for workers to connect with friends and family. According to el Mercurio the interior is nearly all-wood finish to give the space the familiar feeling of a southern Chilean home, and the exterior is highly flexible, weather resistant UV siding.
